Bergamo - Fly Ryanair to Bergamo / Stay Jolly Hotel.
Bergamo is realy two towns in one. The medieval old town and the modern town situated near the train station. The old town, also known as Citta Alta is a medieval town set high up and surrounded by walls. The old town can be accessed by four gateways. A regular bus service runs up the main road to the funicular railway. The climb can be tiring, so the cable car ride to the old town is recommended. There is also a second cable car which goes to San Vigilio, where there are ruins of a fortress with views to the mountains. Bergamo Pizza Shop Enjoy the quaint shops and be sure to sample some freshly cooked pizza in the old town. All the cobbled streets lead to the Piazza Vecchia, a wide open square space surrounded by historic buildings. Relax and enjoy a cappuchino at one of the restaurants in the square. The square is home to several religious buildings including the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Colleoni Chapel. Take a stroll back down to the new town and enjoy the moutain views and the beautiful architectural buildings. Bergamo Old Town The modern town, known as Citta Bassa offers theatres, museums and a wide range of shops which offer a large variety of leather goods. The beauty of staying at Bergamo is that you can take in some of the fresh alpine air. Yet you can also access Milan, the fashion capital of italy for superb shopping and a visit to Il Dumo, a late gothic cathedral by taking an inexpensive one hour train ride direct from Bergamo rail station.
