Bergamo is a historic walled town in Lombardy, Italy, situated at the foothills of the Alps and is a perfect destination for a two day break from the UK. Fly Ryanair to Bergamo. Bergamo is realy two towns in one. The medieval old town and the modern town situated near the train station. The old town, also known as Citta Alta is a medieval town set high up and surrounded by walls. The old town can be accessed by four gateways. A regular bus service runs up the main road to the funicular railway. The climb can be tiring, so the cable car ride to the old town is recommended. There is also a second cable car which goes to San Vigilio, where there are ruins of a fortress with views to the mountains.
